Actually, there is no cutting involved with the
Gamma Knife. In fact, it is not a knife at all, but a highly accurate form
of radiation therapy, which delivers a precise, single high dose of
radiation to a targeted abnormality in the brain. The radiation dose from
any of the 201 narrow beams is small, but at the point where they
converge, the brain receives an accurate, high dose of radiation while the
surrounding tissue remains relatively undamaged. Abnormalities up to 1.5
inches in diameter respond well to Gamma Knife radiosurgery treatment.
Lesions as small as a pea can be detected and
destroyed.
