Recognizing the need to provide community members with the latest
radiation oncology and diagnostic services, Central Mississippi
Medical Center opened the Cancer Care Center in 1987. CMMC was the
first hospital in Mississippi to offer safer radiation therapy
treatments including: X-knife radiosurgery and the state's only
remote high dose rate after loading brachytherapy. Other
non-invasive procedures include radioactive implants such as
palladium seed implants to treat prostate cancer and endocavitary
implants. Central Mississippi Medical Center is the only hospital
in the state to house the Gamma Knife in the Robert R. Smith M.D. Gamma Knife Center.
